90 Million Fantasy Sports Users in India – Report Says
A report by the Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS), in collaboration with global professional services firm KPMG, has explored the strength of the fantasy sports industry in India. The study titled ‘Business of Fantasy Sports’ explores the development, impact and future of fantasy sports, some of which are as follows.
- 65% of survey respondents indicated that sports were among the top three genres they watched on TV and streaming platforms.
- The industry is growing at a rapid pace of registering a 212% CAGR in user base between 2016-19. There are 90 million users as of December 2019.
- Paid-users are 15–20% of active users on online fantasy games (OFS) platforms.
- The top four-five operators account for 95% of the market.
- 30–40% of users play OFS on more than one platform.
- 55% of users mentioned that their engagement with sports leagues increased after OFS started playing.
- The report states, The proliferation of new sports leagues and the entry of OFS operators into other sports has reduced the share of cricket competition from 95% in 2016 to 95% in 2019. This reduces platforms’ reliance on single games and games.
The COVID-19 epidemic has affected live sports. But many operators quickly adapted to situations such as the loss of IPL by offering new games such as baseball and adding quizzes and other products to retain and engage users.
